Shell GameChanger
The Shell GameChanger project supports our development of a 30 kW container-based Dynamic Electrolyser Unit (DEU) designed to produce 20 kg of green hydrogen per day
The Shell GameChanger Project is a collaboration between Dynelectro ApS and Shell Global Solutions International B.V., initiated in May 2023 under Shell’s global innovation program. The project supports the development and proof of concept of Dynelectro’s proprietary Dynamic Electrolyser Unit (DEU) – a 30 kW, container-based high-temperature electrolysis system designed to produce 20 kilograms of green hydrogen per day.
Through this collaboration, Dynelectro and Shell aim to demonstrate how Dynelectro’s novel AC:DC operation technology can significantly enhance the efficiency, lifetime, and flexibility of solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) systems, enabling hydrogen production that dynamically follows renewable energy input.
Dynelectro assembled the prototype at its facility in Viby Sjælland, Denmark, completing the construction of the 20-foot containerised DEU. The final testing phase involved full-scale operation of the prototype, validating its ability to operate stably at 750°C under dynamic load conditions. The DEU was able to ramp up – and down – with power from 0% to 100% and back down to 0%. All while maintaining temperature control within 10°C across the inlet and outlet of the cell.
The project has demonstrated the technical feasibility of dynamic high-temperature electrolysis and establish a foundation for commercial scalability.
Dynelectro’s AC:DC technology has proven to reduce material degradation and extend electrolyser lifetime from the industry average of 2.5 years to potentially over 10 years. Testing has also confirmed that this method stabilises temperature within large SOE stacks, reduces energy loss and enables reliable operation under fluctuating renewable power input. Together, these results position Dynelectro’s technology as a breakthrough solution for efficient, flexible and durable hydrogen production systems suited for Power-to-X applications.
Beyond technology validation, the collaboration offers strategic value. Shell’s participation brings not only funding but also deep industry experience, providing Dynelectro with access to technical guidance, market insight and potential routes for commercialisation and scaling. The project outcome will enable the design of future 1–20 MW Dynamic Electrolyser Units, supporting renewable hydrogen production and fuel synthesis at industrial scale.
Overall, the Shell GameChanger Project represents a pivotal step toward making high-temperature electrolysis commercially viable and grid-responsive, bridging the gap between renewable energy production and large-scale green fuel synthesis.
